Clinical observations on pyloric stenosis in premature infants.

چکیده
Little attention has been given in the past to the incidence and clinical features of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in premature infants. We have observed three cases of this disease in very premature infants within a period of 18 months in one of the premature nurseries in the Simpson Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh. These cases are of special interest because continuous clinical records from birth to convalescence are available. The literature contains a considerable number of brief references to pyloric stenosis in premature infants (Bloch, 1907; Steen, 1930; Donovan, 1932; Gallagher, 1937; Sheldon, 1938; Dobbs, 1939; Vickers and Conrad, 1940; Ford, Brown and McCreary, 1941; Levi, 1941; Williams, 1942; Todd, 1946: 1947; Laubscher and Smith, 1947; Josephs and Hendry, 1950), but no detailed clinical records such as these which illustrate the manner of development of the disease, and certain features which appear to be peculiar to premature infants. The smallest premature infant whom we have observed to develop the disease weighed 3 lb. 3 oz. at birth; this infant will not be included in this paper. because the clinical record is less detailed than in the cases of those recorded.

Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis in a Premature Infant: A Case Report
Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is uncommon in premature babies. In term infants, the typical presentations include a palpable mass over the epigastric area, exaggerated gastric peristalsis after feeding and projectile non-bilious vomiting. However these symptoms are not commonly seen in premature infants. The onset of symptoms in pyloric stenosis in premature infants is later than that in term i...

Increased awareness of idiopathic hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) and readily available ultrasonographic diagnosis might mean that 'classic' presentations are becoming less common. We sought to describe the epidemiology, clinical features and outcomes of children with IHPS in the modern era. A retrospective case review of all cases of IHPS presenting to a single tertiary paediatric hospita...

Based on evidence from two collected and treated clinical observations of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in children of 5 and 12 months of age, the authors give their point of view on the unresolved issue of the etiology of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. They emphasize that there are more and more factors to prove this is an acquired condition.

Background & Aims: In hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) the hypertrophied muscles of pylorus cause partial gastric outlet obstruction. The standard management of HPS is pyloromyotomy. However, successful treatment of HPS with atropine sulfate also has been reported. We aim to compare the outcomes of medical and surgical treatment for HPS. Materials & Methods: In this comparative clinical tri...

Infantile pyloric stenosis is the most frequently encountered infant gastrointestinal obstruction in most general hospitals. Although the primary therapy for pyloric stenosis is surgical, it is essential to realize that pyloric stenosis is a medical and not a surgical emergency. Preoperative preparation is the primary factor contributing to the low perioperative complication rates and the neces...
